Bridging The Gap Vol. 13 No. 2

This is generally accepted as a genuine word of Napoleon Bonaparte.

“I know men, and I tell you, Jesus is not a man. He commands us to believe and gives us no other reason than his awful word, I AM God. Philosophers try to solve the mysteries of the universe by their empty dissertations: fools. They are like an infant who cries to have the moon for a plaything. Christ never hesitates. He speaks with authority. His religion is a mystery; but it subsists by its own force. He seeks, and absolutely requires, the love of men, the most difficult thing in the world to obtain. Alexander, Caesar, Hannibal conquered the world, but had no friends. I myself am perhaps the only person of my day who loves Alexander, Caesar, Hannibal. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and myself founded empires; but upon what? Force. Jesus founded his empire on love; and at this hour millions would die for him. I myself have inspired multitudes with such affection that they would die for me, but my presence was necessary. Now that I am in St. Helena, where are my friends? I am forgotten, soon to return to the earth, and become food for worms. What an abyss between misery and the eternal kingdom of Christ, who is proclaimed, loved, adored, and which is extending over all the earth. Is this death? I tell you, the death of Christ is the death of a God. I tell you, JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.” 1

Napoleon ‘1` Bonaparte was Emperor of the French from 1804 -14. After his defeat at the famous Battle of Waterloo, the British exiled him to the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. He died there six years later. It is believed that it was during this latter time he came to know the reality of Jesus Christ.

The Truth About Truth

When Harvard University was founded, its motto was Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae — “Truth for Christ and the Church.” Its crest showed three books, one face down to symbolize the limitations of human knowledge. But in recent decades that book has been turned face up to represent the unlimited capacity of the human mind. And the motto has been changed to Veritas–”Truth.”

The pursuit of knowledge is praise worthy, yet learning can quickly lead to pride and a refusal to acknowledge any limits on our mental abilities. When that happens, biblical truth is ignored.

What, then, is the truth about truth? A wise king wrote centuries ago, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). We must recognize the relationship between God and truth. Without the help of God’s Spirit and the instruction of God’s Word, man will be ever “learning and never able to come to the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). When we acknowledge and obey His truth, however, we will be set free from spiritual ignorance and error (John 8:32; 17:17). That’s why we must be diligent in studying the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15). It is the only book that tells us the truth about Truth. 2

Vernon Grounds, then, quotes this verse, “Holy Bible, Book divine, Precious treasure, thou art mine. Mine to tell me whence I came, Mine to teach me what I am”–Burton. The thought is given, “To know Christ the Living Word, study the Written Word.”
A certain auto sticker reads, “Evolution says something plus nothing makes everybody and everything.” Is this the truth? Is truth based on an unintelligent evolutionary source? In contrast to this Jesus said that “I am the Truth” ( John 14:7). He didn’t say He was a truth, but “The Truth.” According to the Bible, truth is not an abstract thing; it is synonymous with God. It is found in the person of Jesus Christ who is God. In John 14:7 Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man comes to the Father but through Me.” No one else has ever made this claim.

On September 21, 2003, Dr. Robert Schular, on the Hour of Power broadcast, told the story of a young man who said to him, “I am searching for the truth.” Schular said to him that he has met so many persons who are always searching for the truth, but invariably never find it. Schular told him to stop searching for the truth, because truth is never found in books or philosophical writings. Truth is only found in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who said, “I AM THE TRUTH.”

  • The Egyptian Type Section Under GIRA’s Interpretation of East Africa, Egypt is the Type Section, not Olduvai. The key to unlocking the mystery and finding the correct interpretation for the “Olduvai Gorge Section” is found in “The Egyptian Type Section.” No place has been under such intensive investigation and study from a geological, archaeological, anthropological and pre-historical perspective than ...
  • Archaeological Evidences of Pre-Flood Civilizations Introduction Archaeology has unveiled the remnants of a past, glorious, pre-Flood civilization at various places throughout the earth. It has been conjectured by Archaeologists, Egyptologists and others that there could be a relationship between the megalithic and cyclopean stone structures in Egypt with those found in the Middle East, Northern Africa, Western Europe, England, Mexico, Easter ...
